Lombok

Bali's neighbour Lombok island is quickly gaining popularity thanks to it's gorgeous beaches, great surf, wonderful landscapes and imposing Mt Rinjani, always in the background. You can't compare Bali and Lombok, but it's a great alternative to busy Bali. Southeast of Rinjani has some gorgeous rice terraces, great for walking. You'll also come across large areas growing tobacco for some of the major brands. Visit Kuta and Gili islands if you're after beaches, but I highly recommend getting on a motorbike and exploring the place yourself or with a guide/driver. I met a local at Gili Air who took me around and we stayed at him family's house for a few days, which was a great way to experience the island. Ask around at the Gili islands, there are many guys from Lombok who work as a freelancer, but offer to show you Lombok.
